- Can I still use water if the water heater is not working?
Yes, you can still use cold water if your water heater fails, but with safety limits. Cold taps work normally. Avoid hot taps if the tank is leaking to prevent flooding. If you smell gas, leave immediately. You can briefly use remaining hot water from the tank. For leaks, shut off the water supply and drain the tank. A temporary bypass can restore cold water flow while waiting for repairs. - How many years does a water heater usually last?
A conventional water heater lasts 8–12 years on average, while tankless units can last 20+ years with proper care. Lifespan depends on water quality, maintenance (annual flushing, anode rod replacement), and installation. Plan for replacement around year 10. Neglect or hard water can shorten life to 6 years; diligent care can extend it to 15.
